July School Holiday Workshops

Do you have a young person at home who’s keen to learn new skills these holidays? We offer a range of workshops for 15 – 19 year old’s.

They’ll learn from experts, and even go home with a certificate of participation. Best of all, they’re free. Instead of payment, all we ask is that you give us a koha of canned food. All proceeds go to people in hardship (including our own Unitec students).

Architectural Fabrication (12th – 14th July, 10am – 3pm)

Grow your knowledge for architectural software, fabrication detail processes and get hands-on experience making artifacts on laster cutters and CNC router machines.

Photography: Studio lighting & large format printing (12th – 13th July, 9.30am – 3pm)

This workshop is aimed at years 12 – 13 (or photographically experienced year 11) students. It’s a two-day intensive workshop where you’ll work with studio flash lighting, edit the images in Photoshop and then print them on our large format printer to make a poster-size print which you can take home. Please bring a DSLR camera if you have one and a USB or external hard drive (Mac format).

Cybersecurity (13th – 14th July, 9.30am – 2.30pm)

Don’t want your computer to be hacked? Want to learn how to hide your identity? Keen to help others stay safe online? With so much of our security being trusted to the cyber world, this industry is on the rise. Come join us and get started in Cyber Security.

Screen Printing for Image & Merch (14th – 15th July, 10am – 4pm)

This dynamic and experimental two-day workshop will cover the silk-screen printing basics. You’ll learn how to prepare images, coat and expose screens using a photosensitive emulsion, and print onto a variety of surfaces. At the end of the workshop, you will have produced 2d prints, a custom designed t-shirt and a tote bag.

Screen Bites (15th July, 10am – 3pm)

Learn about jobs in film and television industry. Combine creative and technical skills in this hands-on workshop where you’ll work in collaboration to write, produce, shoot and edit a short project.

Intro to Early Childhood Education (15th July, 9.30am – 2.30pm)

Lets introduce you to the world of ECE. You’ll gain perspective for teaching children at the early developmental stages while exploring play through sensory, interactive and creative activities. Our lecturers will also take you through what you need to know to enter the Bachelor teaching ECE.

Intro to Quantity Surveying (19th July, 10am – 2pm)

Lets introduce you to the world of Quantity Surveying. Our Unitec students build houses on site, and we want you to produce quantities for them. From offsite work, to out in the field – experience how Quantity Surveyors get things done.

Metal & Woodworking (20th July, 10am – 2pm)

Working with tools your thing? Come work with our UPC lecturers. Get an introduction to wrought iron work while using a range of hand tools. You’ll work on a handcrafted item to take home too.

Acting for Stage & Screen (19th – 20th July, 9.30am – 4pm)

Think acting may be the life for you? Keen to know more about how we train at one of Aotearoa’s top drama schools? The Unitec Performing and Screen arts acting programme is offering a two-day workshop designed to give you a taste of the acting life. The workshop will provide you with an introduction to acting training including live performance skills and working in front of the camera. You’ll get to work with industry professionals and highly experienced acting tutors.

Building, Modelling & Design (21st July, 10am – 2pm)

Are you interested in the design of buildings? Interested to find out why buildings are the way they are, and how to sketch and plan for what you need? Shape your thinking around design elements and learn in a fun and hands-on environment with our expert lecturers.

Make your own YouTube title sequence (21st – 22nd July, 10am – 2pm)

In this two-day workshop you’ll experience a tour of Adobe’s After Effects and Green Screen processes in creating a title sequence for your own YouTube channel. In this course we’ll explore how to sequence images, create multi-layered video compositions, and work with particles. By the end of the workshop you’ll have your own motion graphic title sequence to take on the world.

Tactile Worlds (21st – 22nd July, 9am – 3.30pm)

This fun two-day workshop will introduce you to a breadth of materials and processes associated with sculptural practice. We’ll consider the performative object typically associated with artist Erwin Wurm, then construct large scale structures using a range of materials, card and clay.

Takurua Winter dance workshop (20th – 22nd July, 9.30am – 3.30pm)

One of the brightest stars in the winter sky, TAKURUA is the inspiration for the Unitec Dance’s annual winter workshop. Three amazing days of energy, creativity and dance. Discover contemporary technique, muscle and bone, choreography and partnering. There’ll also be a Q&A by current Unitec dance students, led by the dance team.

Mural Painting (23rd July, 10am – 2pm)

Come along to a one-day Stencil art workshop and learn the basics of using spray paint. You’ll be taught by local graffiti artist ‘Berst’.
