Join a club at Unitec!

We all work at our best when we feel connected, supported and involved.

Research shows we can help to build our resilience through interacting with others in our personal and professional lives. Relationships help us to share our challenges, see a path forward, provide empathy and remind us we are not alone.

One of the many great things about being part of Unitec whānau is that there are so many ways to connect with others! Below are just some of the opportunities to network across the organisation and make most of your time at work.

Run by staff for staff, most of these clubs are volunteer initiatives. Helping hands for organising and promoting events are always welcome.

Sustainability club

Garden by the B111 is one of the sustainability club projects demonstrating the link between human and environmental health. Working bees will start again next week, every Thursday between 12.30pm and 1.30pm

Sustainability club is for those of us wanting to leave this place better than we found it. We come together quarterly to plan, reflect and celebrate. And throughout the year, we carry out small but mighty projects across our two campuses. Our aim is to make sustainability more visible, easier to understand and therefore, engaging. Inspired by Unitec’s Sustainability strategy objectives, the four action themes include: wellness, food for all, smart travel and zero waste.

The first hui of the year will be held next week – Thursday 18 February, 1.30 – 2.30pm. Everyone who is interested is welcome, whether you’re a current member of the Sustainability Club or not. The hui will highlight how different people’s interests, skills and attributes could help Unitec achieve its sustainability goals. Your usual daily activities or teaching may be achieving sustainability outcomes already, head along and see!

Please email oneplanet@unitec.ac.nz and we’ll send the calendar invite or answer any questions you have.

Social Club

A Social Club event

The Social Club was devised for those of us who would like to get to know their colleagues across the organisation better. We run four functions a year, sometimes with family/kids, sometimes without. The four events usually cover the categories of culture, fun challenges and of course – the end-of-year knees up, with drinks and food galore.

Everyone is welcome – members of course get to show up to the events for free, as they’ve already pre-paid for them, but other staff members who just want to check us out and casually commit can come along for a one-off fee. To find out more, please get in touch with the Social Club committee (mail: unitecsocialclub@unitec.ac.nz)

Women@Unitec

Waiata at a Women@Unitec event

This club was launched in 2020, as part of Diversity & Inclusion strategy, with objective to provide an inclusive space for women to share their diverse stories and experiences. The 2021 programme of events includes:

  • Come, Connect, Kōrero – a regular series of events throughout the year where women can meet in a supportive space to share stories and experiences around topics of interest
  • Educational events/spaces built around learning particular skills (topics to be confirmed, some initial ideas include car maintenance, self-defence, financial advice etc….)
  • Wānanga – spaces of higher knowledge where we can connect with our ancestors and our whenua
  • Initiatives to recognise key dates – e.g. International Women’s Day, NZ Women’s Suffrage Day, International White Ribbon Day.

Keep an eye on the Nest calendar for event dates. Please contact women@unitec.ac.nz if you have any questions or suggestions or if you would like to be involved in the volunteer organising group.
