Celebrating te rangatiratanga o te reo Māori

As a tohu (sign) of committment to Te Noho Kotahitanga a number of staff at Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka are hoping to encourage celebrating te reo Māori on a whole new level.

Mahuru Māori – te reo Māori throughout September

In conjunction with planned celebrations aligned with  Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, which kicks off on Monday 14 September, our Kaihautu alongside UPC’s Anaru Parangi have put additional time and effort into creating resources and activities enabling our entire organisation to participate in Mahuru Māori which celebrates te reo Māori for the entire month of September.

The concept of Mahuru Māori was crafted by Poutiaki Reo, Paraone Gloyne of Te Whare Wānanga o Aotearoa in 2014. He, like many others has been on a constant quest to revitalise te reo rangatira and normalise its use and correct pronunciation across the country.

Throughout the years thousands more have taken up the mantle and participated in Mahuru Māori, by setting their own goals and being brave and bold enough to give it a go.

To find out more about Mahuru Māori and its origins you can visit their website and register to set and tackle your own personal te reo Māori challenge.

Te wero – the challenge to our staff

As part of our commitment to te reo Māori, our Kaihautu have created a number of resources and activities and gifted the kaupapa with the name Te Puna o te Kupu (Our Spring, Our Language).

Watch this space as we will promote and highlight a number of kaupapa throughout the month which will include:

  • Kiwaha – Coloqiualisms – frequently used sayings
  • Stories highlighting champions of te reo
  • Competitions and challenges including tongue twisters
  • Kupu Motuhake – Discipline and School specific language translated into te reo
  • Activities enhancing an understanding of Te Noho Kotahitanga Values

Check out our champions in UPC below, leading the way with a tongue twister challenge that’s open to all teams to have a go at. The words recited in the video are

KA TAKA TE KAPA, KA KATA TE TAMA – THE PENNY DROPS, THE BOY LAUGHS

(1 minute 44 seconds)

Recognise the reo champions at Unitec!

Do you have any champions in your team that should be celebrated for their commitment to te reo?

Send us your stories or gift them with a Rangatiratanga values card.
