UPC reaches potential students through virtual careers expo

The virtual Unitec booth, where visitors could access information and videos about our programmes

Our UPC team took full advantage of an opportunity to share information and advice to prospective students at last week’s ‘Virtual Careers Expo’, where they set up an online booth and ran a live webcast.

Why a ‘virtual careers expo’?

Careers expos across New Zealand were cancelled or postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  This has resulted in a significant gap in information for young people intending to move on to higher study in 2021 and those intent on researching their future study options. To address this vacuum, Media Design School invited all New Zealand tertiary education providers to participate in a Virtual Careers Expo. The expo was designed to replace the face-to-face environment that institutions and students would normally attend and was run from an existing virtual platform developed by the Media Design School’s sister institution, Torrens University Australia.

The UPC team got to work, building their virtual show stand through the expo platform and promoting the event through their secondary school newsletter and on the Unitec Facebook and Instagram pages.

The Unitec booth

The Unitec booth was open on Thursday and Friday last week and was visited by 160 attendees – mostly secondary school students and parents.

While in the booth, visitors could independently find programme information through links to the website, the 2021 Programme Brochures, links to UPC initiatives like the July School Holiday workshops, Couch Sessions and Uni-talks and register for Open Day 2020. They could also chat to the UPC team through the live chat function and watch videos about our programmes and the support we offer to our students.

Anaru Parangi, Team Leader Secondary Schools and Community Engagement, hosted a live webcast showcasing our Mt Albert campus, which is available “on-demand” until 19 July – view it here (you’ll need to register to access the platform, and select New Zealand)

Following the expo, the UPC team has seen a jump in registrations for their school holiday workshops, which begin the week of Monday 29 July.
