Free flu shots – more vaccinations available

There is currently a limited quantity of flu vaccinations available again for staff at our Te Puna Waiora health centre. We first offered this to all staff over a week ago, but initially we only had limited quantities – more are available now.

Influenza is a significant public health issue in New Zealand which is why the the Ministry of Health funds a flu immunisation programme every year. You can find out more about this programme and why the Ministry supports this initiative here.

Getting your flu shot on campus

Our Mt Albert campus is still closed. Only approved teaching staff and authorised service staff can come on campus (e.g. Security, H&S). Therefore you need to follow the process and instructions below to get your flu vaccination:

  • Call the Te Puna Waiora, on 0800 10 85 10 or on Skype xtn 7248 to book an appointment. There are just two days during the week to get your shot, either a Tuesday or Thursday, between 8.30 am and 3.30pm.
  • Then download and fill out the vaccination consent form and email it to medcentre@unitec.ac.nz before your appointment. The centre cannot accept printed copies on the day of your appointment due to COVID-19 restrictions, and vaccinations cannot be provided without the completed form, so make sure you send us your consent form before your appointment.
  • Allow at least 30 minutes for your flu vaccination, as you will need to wait for 20 minutes after you have the shot, as a precaution for any adverse reaction (which is rare).
  • The team are vaccinating people in their cars to maintain social distancing as much as possible. Do wear clothes that easily expose your upper arm area and wear a mask if you have one.
  • Follow these directions to our Te Puna Waiora carparks, next to the main entry doors by the Red Lecture Theatre, outside Level 0 of the Te Puna building. This is important as we need you to wait in your car for us.
  • When you arrive please follow these instructions:
    • Toot your horn to alert health centre staff that you have arrived
    • Right-handers move into the passenger’s seat of your car (left-handers stay in the driver’s seat)
    • Leave your car door open, roll up your sleeve to expose your left shoulder (or right shoulder if left-handed), and wait for the nurse
    • Keep your head turned away from the nurse as much as possible (wear a mask if you have one)

If you are coming to campus by foot or bike, there is an area where you can wait for the required 20 minutes after your vaccination, outside under cover. Please let reception know if you are intending to arrive by bike or foot when booking your appointment.

Do call and speak to one of the nurses if you have any health queries or concerns about the flu vaccine on 0800 10 85 10 or on Skype xtn 7248.
