Supported Learning whanaungatanga evening, creating connections and shared experiences

A few weeks ago our Supported Learning students kicked off their year by bringing their families to our Mt Albert campus for the ‘Supported Learning family evening’ – a great opportunity for whanaungatanga / creating connections, as the students embark on their journey at Unitec.

For any new student there is an immense sense of freedom and growth in the first days, weeks and months on campus, says Supported Learning APM, David Hicks.

“The family evening was a chance to share the excitement and nerves felt by not only the students, but their proud whānau. It’s an important step for us to get to know our students’ families, as they’re a big part of ensuring their success. We keep in close contact throughout the year – we have a private Facebook group that we update regularly with news of what’s going on here and in the outside world.”

A key aim of Unitec Supported Learning is to provide students with skills that will give them independence and enable them to be successful and happy when they join the workforce.

“It’s been so satisfying to see many of our student’s progress through their study here then go on to secure employment” said Dave.

An example of this success is Lyndon, who graduated from our Supported Learning course in 2015. He is now working as a Mammal Watcher for Downer. The role involves scanning the harbour carefully for any hazards including mammals, divers, small crafts, anything that may get in the way of the safe operation of their equipment. His main role is to ensure the mammals are safe should they enter the area where work is underway.

Over the next few weeks we’ll share stories on how our teaching staff continue to support students using remote resources. We’d love to hear from you – email communications@unitec.ac.nz with your stories, ideas and successes while teaching remotely.
