Coronavirus: Update 19 March 2020

In this update:

  • Staff and students should self-isolate for 14 days from their arrival date if they have arrived in NZ within the last two weeks
  • Staff and students in self-isolation need to register
  • IT is finalising our remote working capability
  • Further updates this afternoon on:
    • Working from home
    • Plans for alternative means of delivery for lectures in our large lecture theatres

The coronavirus situation is a rapidly evolving one, and we’re doing our best to keep you as up to date as we can on developments.

The key points are:

  • In summary, there are now 20 reported cases of coronavirus in New Zealand, all associated with international travel. See updated number on Ministry of Health’s website.
  • The Prime Minister has advised that in the best interests of the community, all arrivals into New Zealand in the past two weeks should self-isolate for 14 days from their arrival date, and we are going to heed this advice. This is an update on the previous announcement that all arrivals into the country from Monday, March 16 at 1am are required to self-isolate for 14 days. For example, if you arrived in New Zealand on Thursday, March 12, then you need to self-isolate for the balance of your 14 days, so you can return to work on Thursday, March 26.  All staff and students affected by this new move should now self-isolate.  You may already be back at work, but you now need to base yourself at home and remain home working until the balance of your 14 days is up.  See advisory on the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 website for guidelines around self-isolation.
  • Staff and students in self-isolation need to register so we can keep a running self-isolation record. Students should email studentsupport@unitec.ac.nz and staff should email human.resources@unitec.ac.nz
  • We’ve been deluged with requests for hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes and are doing our best to keep up with supplies, despite a global shortage. We are looking at other solutions, but in the meantime, we urge you to follow the very clear Ministry of Health guidelines about good hygiene measures, including washing your hands with soap
  • Healthline is experiencing an extremely heavy volume of calls. If you can’t get through, they recommend you contact your local GP or medical centre – by calling first, rather than turning up at the surgery.  We remind you of the basic rule to stay at home if you don’t feel well
  • You will have received a test text message yesterday – this is part of our detailed contingency planning around mass communications in emergency situations. In addition, IT is finalising our remote working capability and will be requesting all users to change their passwords so they are consistent across all systems and devices. Further communications will follow on this today
  • Te Puna Ako is working with Timetabling on contingency plans for alternative means of delivery for lectures in our large lecture theatres. Further communications will follow on this today

We continue to focus on providing a safe environment for staff and students to work and study at Unitec, and are adopting a range of precautionary and preventative measures. We will continue to keep you updated as more information comes to hand.

What you can do to look after yourself

As outlined above everyone can help by ensuring good health etiquette – washing hands for twenty seconds, sneezing into your arm and not touching your face.

Feeling unwell?

Stay at home if you’re feeling unwell – don’t put yourself or others at risk.

Call Healthline – 0800 358 5453 or phone ahead to your GP or medical centre if you’re feeling unwell, and they’ll advise on what you should do.

I am not aware that I received the test text message. Is this to unitec phones only or to email?

    Hi Roger,

I received a text message sent to my private mobile phone number as registered in the HR system.
It may be a good idea to ensure your mobile phone number registered with HR is up to date to ensure you can receive the text messages. You should be able to do this through the HR self service portal.

    All the best
    Dagmar

    Mōrena Roger,
The test was issued to all permanent & Fixed term staff who had a cellphone listed on their HR personnel file.

Casual staff will be contacted via another mechanism as, due to the nature of our business, we have a large pool of people that may only be at Unitec for a few days in the year (if at all).

To check or update your cell phone number, go onto the Nest then go to Staff portal – then select PeopleSoft HR.
You can then update your cellphone number here.
Alternatively please e-mail the Human Resources team if there are any issues with your details.

If you have any further issues, please feel free to give me a call.
    Ngā mihi

    Dan

Thanks to both, I didn’t know this was an option. Now in under the ‘Cell’ selection.
