Government announces new governing council of the NZIST, with Murray Strong as Chair

Congratulations to Murray Strong, Interim Executive Director of the IST Establishment Unit and our current Commissioner, who has been appointed to Chair of the new governing council of the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST).

Along with Murray’s appointment, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced six other appointments to the first governing council of the NZIST, effective from 1 April 2020. The new governing council members are:

  • Chair of the NZIST Council: Murray Strong
  • Deputy Chair: Kim Ngārimu
  • Maryann Geddes
  • Kathy Grant
  • Tania Hodges
  • Sam Huggard
  • Peter Winder

You can read the full announcement on the New Zealand Government website.

Murray’s appointment means that he is no longer able to fill the role of Interim Chief Executive for the NZIST, as originally planned. To fill this role in the period before Stephen Town starts on 6 July, Chris Collins has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive of the NZIST, effective 1 April 2020.

While Murray and our Advisory Committee will step down from their roles on 1 April, there will be a period of transition as they hand over to our new Board of Directors, announced yesterday.

Our new Board will jointly govern Unitec and MIT, chaired by Peter Winder who is also one of the new governing council members.
