As of yesterday (Thursday 12 March), there were no additional confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 to report in New Zealand for the fifth consecutive day. Our case number remain unchanged – New Zealand currently has five confirmed cases.

Overnight, the World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 coronavirus is now characterised as a pandemic. This is the first pandemic caused by a coronavirus.

The pandemic status reinforces the importance of planning and preparation, whilst continuing to take a precautionary approach.

Our Incident Management Team is continuing to meet daily and is working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the unlikely event of a campus-wide closure.  We have a Pandemic Plan prepared and ready as part of our Incident Management framework and will be issuing more information next week on contingency plans, including set-up for working from home, if needed.  We have only a very small number of staff either overseas, or due to travel, and are continuing to assess travel plans on a daily basis. We would urge all other staff who have recently returned from overseas trips – or are planning to travel – to self-manage.

We remain very vigilant in checking the documentation of both International and domestic students who have returned from self-isolation, either in New Zealand or overseas. Once their documentation is cleared, we’re informing teaching staff but their identity and personal details should not be disclosed to anyone else, for privacy reasons.

Several members of staff are going above and beyond to exercise care and compassion in individual cases, while other groups are opting to exercise added precautionary measures if their study or work takes them into contact with at-risk groups.

The Ministry’s Director-General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, has reinforced the message to stay at home if you’re feeling unwell: Don’t put yourself or others at risk if you are unwell.
