Te Wiki o te Reo Māori: A week of discovery and kia kaha te Reo Māori

Student Council member Mereana Kiore and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori Project Manager, Jonyne Mariu-Komene

Last week many of our staff made a focus on discovering more about te Reo Māori and improving their vocabulary during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.

Every new word we learn, each event we participate in, or support, all contributes to our much bigger goal of building our Mātauranga Māori capability and supporting our Māori Success strategy.

Thank you to everyone who participated and the team that pulled the programme together for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, which was led by Jonyne Mariu-Komene – Whai Ake Teaching and Co-ordination Support with support from Camelia Pirika and Jess Aranui.

Many of us not only improved our te Reo Māori vocabulary but enjoyed time out with colleagues and developed new connections with other staff members.

Key activities for the week were the word match game , learning how to ask for (discounted) kawhe and a pihikete in te Reo Māori, Matua Hare’s kōrero, and learning how to sing the national anthem in the three official languages of Aotearoa (Māori, English and sign language).

The grand finale event and highlight for many, was Friday’s gathering for the mass karakia, singing and signing the national anthem together – the vibe and comrardery was great – a wonderful way to finish Te Wiki o te Reo Māori on campus!
