Christchurch tragedy – Beware of online related scams and attacks

There have been numerous online scams and attacks following last Friday’s tragedy in Christchurch. Please take a few minutes to find out below what these are and how to make sure you don’t get scammed!

  • Online donation fraud – Beware of online requests for donations to the Christchurch tragedy unless you are 100% sure it is a legitimate site. These are usually ‘phishing’ emails containing links to fake online banking. Your bank will never email you with a request to donate, but if you log into your online banking site you will be able to safely make a donation, or go into a branch of any bank
  • Be careful with opening or sharing files – At this time please be mindful of opening files particularly from external parties you are not familiar with, as there are currently a number of files being circulated which have malware embedded. Malware is software that is designed to disrupt, damage or gain unauthorised access to your computer. Just because someone you know has shared a video file with you, does not mean it is safe to open

Note: The Chief Censor has classified the video of the fatal Christchurch shootings as “objectionable” meaning it is banned, and therefore an offence to share it. Please also review Unitec’s Electronic Devices and System Policy, 2.6, which outlines acceptable and unacceptable use of Unitec electronic devices and systems.
