The ‘why and how’ of Performance Partnering

Each year we make time to review our performance during the previous year and plan ahead for the upcoming year.

When thinking about performance there are four key elements to consider:

  • Our goals: What we need to do and achieve to be successful in our role
  • What skills we need to develop to deliver on our goals
  • The ‘good stuff’ that we enjoy that also helps us through the more challenging times
  • Who and how we need to partner to achieve our goals

Each of these elements are discussed and agreed during the development of your individual ADEP plan (Achieve Develop Enjoy Partner) and will also link to your Team Diamond and/or Team Action Plan (see below).

Remember, it is important to ‘close the loop’ before we start planning for the new year. Not only does it give us the chance to recognise and celebrate our achievements but it also provides useful input into the following years plan. We do this through the Review of Achievements process. So make sure that you take time to understand what this process means for you, and how to make the most of it before you meet with your team leader to review your achievements from 2018, and formalise your ADEP plan for 2019.

Team Diamond and Action Plans

Each year the Executive team updates our Unitec Diamond which outlines our purpose and priorities. This is then shared throughout the organisation so each team can then develop their own Team Diamond and/or Action Plan which is aligned with our overall Unitec Diamond.

Your Team Diamond and Action Plan are key resources to reference when developing your ADEP plan.

Teaching staff and leadership teams

Please review Mary Johnston’s email of 13 February 2019 – Performance Partnering – ‘need to knows’. This outlines information specific to leadership teams which includes some changes to the standard ADEP template, and also for teaching staff it references teaching competencies and the mandatory requirement of two badges in 2019 which must be stated in your ADEP.

Key steps in the annual Performance Partnering process

  • Meet with your team leader to review your achievements – this is about looking back at your ADEP plan from the previous year and discussing the wins and challenges

  • The next step is to draft your individual ADEP plan and then to meet with your team leader to review it. This will include your goals, development areas, what makes work great for you and who you need to partner with to achieve your goals. Your team diamond and action plan will be useful inputs to this plan (refer left)

  • Quarterly partnering conversations – Regular quarterly check-ins with your team leader to discuss how you’re tracking with your ADEP plan and to explore if you need any support or guidance to achieve your goals. During this process you may agree to make some updates to your ADEP
