St John’s College team wins Unitec Award for Enterprising Technology

David Glover presented the ‘Unitec Award for Enterprising Technology’ at the Young Enterprise Scheme National Awards last week

The Unitec Award for Enterprising Technology was won last Thursday at the Young Enterprise Scheme National Awards by a team from St John’s College in Hastings for their low cost rain and flood warning device which they have named ‘George’.

The Young Enterprise Scheme, which held its annual award ceremony at Wellington’s TSB Arena, invites high school students to set up and run a real business, helping them to learn about commerce and entrepreneurship. This year around 4,000 students took part, creating over 900 new companies between them.

The St John’s College team came up with their concept for George after a friend was affected by flooding. It monitors rainfall and floodwaters, sending real-time updates via text message. They have already secured customers in the Napier City and Hastings District Councils, plus a local vineyard owner. Ravensdown, a co-operative focused on reducing environmental impact on farm land, has also come on board as a commercial partner to assist in developing the product.

The Unitec Award for Enterprising Technology was presented by David Glover, our Director of Partnerships and Student Recruitment.
