Unitec-Hawkins celebrate three-year partnership

Hawkins Project Co-ordinator Kathryn Davies at the ceremony with Gary Walker – Hawkins Executive General Manager

The very successful Hawkins Construction partnership has been running for three years now and the team last week celebrated the occasion at a ceremony for the graduates of the Cadet programme. Hawkins moved their cadetship programme to us in 2017 motivated by the success of our 2016 Better than Before programme, known now as Project Excellence.

At the event, fifteen cadets celebrated completing their vocational training programme in Construction Site Management, which included Hawkins senior management and members of our staff.

Nine of the cadets were presented with certificates of completion for their Hawkins cadetship, which is a 2-3 year programme incorporating site-based training modules with the taught programme delivered by us.  The remaining six cadets will be joined by a new intake next year, for the next iteration of the programme.

2018 Hawkins Cadets with Hawkins leadership team and our facilitators

Earlier in October the Hawkins Project Excellence group completed the last of their six modules for the year. Participants produced videos summarising their growth and development in the programme. This is a partnership programme that connects class-based vocational training in Construction Management with site-based activities, for experienced site staff who are already working in a supervisory role.

Over the three years the programmes have run, around 150 Hawkins employees and sub-contractors have taken part. Our expertise is helping to develop a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, which is an important part of Hawkins’ drive to maintain their position as a leading player in construction.

Congratulations to our Hawkins team for managing and leading this very important and valuable partnership, which includes module facilitators – Building Construction and Services Associate Professor Linda Kestle, Building and Construction Lecturers Neil Laing, Taija Puolitaival, and Amos Clarke, and the Hawkins Programme Co-ordinator, Kathryn Davies.

Hawkins team – previous Staff Awards winners!

At the 2016 Staff Awards the Hawkins Better than Before team won the Chief Executive Award category. They were recognised as a great example of the ‘way we want to work here’ demonstrating collaboration, not only internally but externally, and for developing a programme that met the needs of our partner which resulted in winning further work from them.

If you know any individuals or teams who have a similar success story, make sure you submit a nomination for them in the new 2018 Unitec Staff Excellence Awards.

The new Excellence Awards provide a category for everyone, whether they’re in a teaching or support role, so make sure you nominate a colleague or team by highlighting their contribution or achievement – it takes just 300 words. Nominate now!
