Glow@Artweek: our students light up Devonport

More than 60 of our second-year Architecture students transformed Devonport’s Windsor Reserve into a light spectacular over the weekend for GLOW@Artweek – one of the leading attractions of Artweek Auckland which finished yesterday.

The students, under the guidance of Architecture lecturer Ainsley O’Connell and the second year Design Studio tutors, worked to a zero waste, zero budget brief, using items such as tyres, bamboo, piping and plastic bottles to create nine different light installations. The work is part of their end of year assessment, and students will be judged on creative thinking, design, curation, installation, collaborative working  and sustainability.

Unitec partnered with Vector to use two Nissan Leaf G2 electric cars to power the installations, with cars acting as a rechargeable and mobile renewable energy source. The team also worked closely with the Devonport Business Association who hosted the event with local businesses staging a Friday After Five festival in the village, which featured food trucks, live music, art activations and family entertainment.

ONE News featured GLOW@Artweek on the late news on Friday night, and the Project also featured a clip from GLOW in its Whip Around the Country segment.
