Last Monday’s pōhiri to welcome Murray Strong as our Unitec Commissioner was a warm occasion, recognising the large task ahead, but with a shared optimism about Unitec’s future and the Government’s commitment to support Unitec.

Merran said, while we face challenging times, it was a privilege to welcome Murray, having enjoyed working alongside him in the past.

Murray spoke of his impressions of Unitec, noting staff were openhearted, generous and passionate people who care deeply about this place. He said his role was to ensure Unitec is in a position to take up the opportunities that will be offered for our success. Although Unitec is facing challenges, Murray noted the whole sector will be going through necessary change and a lot of interested parties, including Government, the ITP sector, and the community, were watching with interest as we lead the way. He encouraged all staff to get involved and assured all those attending that there would be opportunities to contribute.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins also sent encouraging words for Murray to share with staff, saying that the Government is absolutely committed to supporting Unitec as we work through the change process towards success.

Following the pōhiri, the group shared a delicious kai with Murray in Manaaki (the wharekai).
