What started as a great opportunity for our Vehicle Systems and Materials team to showcase their equipment and expertise, ended with an award at the recent CRC Speedshow!

It was a chance to network with industry experts and fans, promote Unitec to potential students and associate with a large, popular automotive event. And it didn’t hurt to have some cutting-edge technology – our emulation equipment –  to showcase.

Academic Leader, Vehicle Systems & Materials, Prabhat Chand said the CRC Speedshow was a spectacular celebration showcasing the finest, fastest and coolest new cars, race cars, classics cars, motor sport celebrities, wild hot rods, muscle cars and custom creations from around New Zealand and the world.

Our exhibition, run by Lee Baglow, Prabhat Chand, Ivor Davey, Gerald Ryan, Vithanage Perera (Sela) Anura Bakmeedeniya, Roman Kudin and Donald Nderingo, involved a Lincoln Electric welding simulator, along with an engine management simulator with the latest in automotive diagnostic technology. Visitors to the stand could try their hand at automotive control system fault-finding.

The judge who awarded the team the ‘Best Consumer Engagement’ trophy said “it was a chance for visitors to try their welding skills in a safe environment. I saw two friends going head to head, trying to get the best score on the machine. Great to see the staff giving people helpful tips and advice on welding. A lot of fun and good to see something different!”

Christo Potgeiter, Head of Vehicle System and Materials said “the lecturers of Vehicle Systems and Materials are strongly committed to the future of the automotive industry, working hard on recruitment, networking, and visible Unitec presence”.
