Our people – Long service recognition

We have put in place an initiative to recognise all our staff who have reached a  significant long service milestone. Many of you say it’s the people that you work with that make this place special, so it’s really important that we acknowledge and thank everyone who has made a long term commitment to us!

The recognition programme started last week with letters and certificates sent out to everyone who during the first half of 2018 reached a ’10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 year’ milestone.

From now on, each month, we’ll be acknowledging anyone who is celebrating a 10 year or above milestone (in 5 year multiples – 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…) with a letter and certificate, plus we’ll also be acknowledging all our staff celebrating a a five year milestone in our monthly Nest post.

A big congratulations to everyone listed below and thank you again for your commitment to us!

There are many of us who have worked at Unitec for more than 5 years and more than 10 years who are not on that list. I also know of someone who has worked at Unitec for more than 25 years who is not on the list.

Also, what about Long Service Leave? Does that still kick in at 10 years and 15 years? What about for people here longer than that?

  2. Dianne Roy on

    Hi Pam,
I agree, HR must have an interesting list. Glad they don’t use that for payroll.

It quite clearly says on my end of the portal that my employment at Unitec commenced on 29/10/1986. My maths tells me that in October I will have worked here for 32 years!!! I did take some parental leave and study leave for my PhD, maybe they have knocked 25 years off for that……..

There is at least one other 30 year plus staff member I know of who is also not on the list.

    Kia ora,

Thanks for your messages and our apologies that our post wasn’t clear enough – the recognition listing is based on multiples of 5 years. We’ll update the post now. So while Diane’s 31 years and Pam’s 23 years with us is truly valued, as well as Surya and Glenn’s 13 years and Alistair’s 6 year milestone, our recognition programme is for 10 year milestones and every 5 years above that. We will also be listing our 5 year milestones in our monthly posts.

    Ngā mihi
    Victoria

Kia ora Adrian, thank you for your message, as mentioned above, we are focused on just five year multiples, so if anyone feels that they have been missed in our 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 year (and more) milestones list, please do send me an email and we’ll check this. Long service leave – This does still apply if it is referenced in your employment agreement, and your acknowledgement letter when you reach the relevant milestone will detail this. If you have a question about this send a message to human.resources@unitec.ac.nz.

    Kia ora Victoria
Thank you for your clarification, but given this is the first time this has been done, might not it be appropriate to do a one off that includes all log-serving staff? Most have had no acknowledgement previously, or, if it did happen, many years ago. For example, I have had no service recognition since 20 years service (11 years, 9 months ago). Others I know of did not even get this.

I am sorry seem negative about an initiative that is clearly intended to be positive, but I don’t seem to be alone in not following the thinking behind this.
There were about 70 certificates awarded, wouldn’t it be better to recognise the 70 longest serving members and then gradually work backwards to the 5 year milestones?

  7. Ivan Shalley on

Given the recent negative publicity surrounding Unitec, I think it’s a great initiative to recognise long standing staff members. However, next time before publishing a list like this perhaps check to ensure ALL staff members who are entitled to recognition are mentioned. For those missed of us missed off the list it makes us feel underappreciated after all the years of commitment and hard work.

Hi Roger and Dianne, we do appreciate your feedback but Unitec is keen to acknowledge these 5 year milestones. That has meant that we have a bulk load up front of those that have reached 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 etc milestones this year. We will then be reviewing them each month to acknowledge any new milestones. If there are any further queries, please email me.

  9. Victoria Russell on

Hi Hua, as outlined to Adrian, please refer to your employment agreement to see if and when long service leave applies.

  10. Kay Bramley on

I have to agree with all of the comments. The data in the list above is incomplete. There are a lot of people between 6 and 30 years who are not acknowledged. While the intention is obviously positive, there are people who feel they have been ignored as they do not fit neatly into a number that can be divided by 5.

Nice to see all the other people who have been here a while too, there are a few of us. I have been here 22 years and appreciated the extra leave I received for 10 and 15 year anniversaries, I wish there was something at 20 years too! I’d suggest maybe looking at this at five yearly marks.

  12. Dagmar Osborne on

I would like to congratulate all the people who had a round work anniversary in the last 6 month and who were honored in this way.
