Injury trends – slips, trips and falls

Winter is when ‘slips, trips and falls’ are the key contributors to incidents and accidents around campus, so please do take care. If you do have an accident or encounter a potential hazard, make sure you log it in our injury register, the Vault.

Already this year there’s been 61 injuries and 35 of them have been due to slips, trips or falls. And just recently, two injuries occurred in low light areas on Mt Albert campus so the H&S team, who review and analyse all accidents and incidents, did a review of all lighting on campus, then liaised with Facilities Management to action improvements and repairs. A similar review is going to be done at Waitakere campus.

So please do log any injuries or incidents that happen on campus as these will be reviewed for action. Prevention is the key focus for our Health & Safety team so reporting of a near miss or a potential risk allows Health & Safety to be proactive and potentially save someone from injury!

What can you do?

  • Watch where you are walking! A common cause of accidents is looking at your phone when out and about, instead of looking at where you are going! There are many uneven surfaces around Mt Albert campus and in some of the older buildings so pocket the phone and avoid rushing if you can – and don’t run!
  • In wet and damp conditions keep a look out for puddles of water, shiny and mossy surfaces – all potential slip hazards
  • Make sure you use the hand rails when on stairs – accidents on stairwells can cause multiple of serious injuries

Health & Safety ‘Hero of the month’

Saleshni Nand

Every month, the Health & Safety  recognise a ‘Safety hero’ – someone who is focused on ensuring the people they work with or teach, are safe in their work or teaching space. Last month their safety hero was Saleshni Nand, a Lecturer and Senior Technician for Health and Community.

Health & Safety Advisor, Pam Theunissen, says Saleshni is ‘on top of her game’ when it comes to Health & Safety in her work environment. She keeps all her processes and procedures up to date through constant reviews, and her labs are always kept immaculately clean and safe for the best student experience.
