Changes to Wairaka Land Company

The Wairaka Land Company Strategic Property team has been involved in a consultation process since 12 April following a high level review of the company’s form and function by the WLC Board at the request of Unitec’s Council. The review identified that WLC has substantially fulfilled its core purpose now that recent building projects have been completed, and all of the land consented for disposal or development has been sold.

As a result, all but two of the WLC Directors have resigned.

The WLC team provided some useful feedback to the initial change proposal and the following changes have now been agreed:

  • The Facilities Management, Sports Centre and Goods & Transport teams will become part of the Unitec Operations team. The future reporting line will be confirmed by 30th June 2018.
  • The Development Manager role (held by Luis Trullos) will be retained and report into the Executive Director-Operations or delegate and will work closely with the two Directors of the WLC, the Chief Financial Officer and where relevant the Chief Executive. Company secretarial and governance support duties for WLC will be added to this role.
  • The remaining roles will be disestablished. If no suitable alternative roles can be found at Unitec, the staff in those roles will be made redundant and will serve out their notice periods.

In his recent blog post, Interim Chief Executive Alastair Carruthers paid tribute to the talent of the team saying: “WLC’s good people have done a great job of creating a result that will be valued for many years, and they will have plenty of opportunities ahead as these are some of the smartest and most committed property experts around.”
