Two of our design grads and Mataaho ‘star’ in new TV design show!

A new local TV ONE show, Design Junkies, takes six designers through a series of challenges, scoring points each week, to win the title of New Zealand’s Best Design Junkie. The show line up features two of our Creative Industries grads, contestant Rupert Herring, BDVA, who majored in Contemporary Craft 2015, and judge Tim Webber, Bachelor of Design 2009.

And, when the contestants aren’t out and about salvaging materials for their designs, they’re based at Mataaho using our place as their ‘maker-space’.

The production company was delighted to have discovered and secured Mataaho for their show, as it was the only space they found that could cater for all their needs, from painting to carpentry to joinery facilities.

This six episode show goes to air this Thursday 3 May at
7.30pm on TV ONE.

Design Junkies is about creativity, problem solving and that ‘no. 8 wire mentality’ that we Kiwis are so well known for. It’s hosted by New Zealand artist Shane Hansen who says “It’s nice to see people who are doing something creative. It’s not so often a TV series showcases the arts.”

Update to post – 7 May 2018:

The Weekend Herald (4 May 2018) TV reviewer describes Design Junkies as “…surprising and delightful…” and also references Mataaho; he says “And how cool is that massive workshop they’re using at Unitec? If that doesn’t make you want to take up a trade, nothing will”!
