We’re building on the success of last year’s Graduation Haka Pohiri by Māori staff and students by encouraging all staff attending the Graduation ceremony on 11 April to take part.
The performance at last September’s ceremony was a Unitec first and this year it’s going to be even bigger. This is a great opportunity for staff to engage with Te Ao Māori as we celebrate the success of our students.
A video of the haka pohiri will be available as a resource to help staff learn the words and actions before the graduation ceremony and there will also be a rehearsal for those attending on the day. In the meantime, here are the words of one of the key components of the haka pohiri planned for the April graduation:
Hei runga – Hei raro!
Hī Hā! Hī! Hā!
Toia mai i te waka
Ki te urunga – te Waka
Ki te moenga – te Waka
Ki te takotoranga i takoto ai i te waka hī!
For more information please contact Jessica Aranui (Marae Coordinator).
The Pohiri Haka at the last Graduation ceremonies were so moving. I can’t wait to be part of it in April. Thank you Marae team!!

Kia ora, I applaud this innovation. Demonstrating to the entire academic community and our students whanau that we honor Te Tiriti o Waitangi with our commitment to Te noho kotahitanga.

Proud to work at Unitec
Thanks for this! It is helpful. Can we possibly have a recording of it? It is easier to learn a song with the music than to only recite words. It does not have to be a professional recording, just someone singing it and the recording placed on the Nest somewhere.
Antoinette
Hi Antoinette, our apologies for the delay with responding, but we do now have a recording of the actual Graduation Haka Pohiri which is available on our Unitec Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/unitecintalumni/videos/372879949863174/. Hope this helps!
