Ensuring we have the right platforms to support MIT and Unitec working as a combined provider is a major part of our future pathway.
Director of Digital Strategy & Experience Mike Foley talks us through some of the mahi we have coming up.
The Digital Team is making good progress on the digital transformation projects it has on the go, but will need some help from kaimahi ‘staff’ with an upcoming major project:
“We are in the process of developing the long-term Digital Roadmap which will benefit kaimahi by making it easier and simpler to work across the unified organisation. Kaimahi will have noticed some IT changes already with much more coming soon,” Mike says.
Windows 11 update
The latest edition of our operating system is being rolled out soon. It promises new, intuitive features with a fresh look, improved performance, streamlined functionality, and built-in security for productivity and inspired creativity
As part of this upgrade, each team has nominated a Change Champion. Our champions will be in touch with you soon to share a form which allows us to capture key information about all the tools you use on your device. The insights you provide will ensure the upgrade focuses on user needs.
The rollout will require the digital team to install the new operating system manually on every device.
The project will start in the next few weeks and needs to be completed by early-September 2026. It will be delivered through a phased roll-out across departments, designed to ensure minimal disruption.
We will ensure you receive:
- Information on how to book your device in to be upgraded
- Loan laptops so you can keep working while the update is installed
- More information via our Windows 11 FAQs page
Please contact your Change Champion or manager with any further questions.
Microsoft 365 Collaboration now and into the future.
A key component of MIT and Unitec’s Digital Roadmap is focused on having one suite of all Microsoft products – Teams, Sharepoint and Outlook.
You may have noticed that some of this work has already been completed with the remaining mahi to take place behind the scenes over the coming months.
What’s new?
In Teams, it is now possible to search for, chat and call colleagues from across MIT and Unitec.
You can collaborate on documents through Teams and invite colleagues to Teams sites or files.
In Outlook, you can book meeting rooms and search colleague’s information across the organisation.
On Sharepoint, it is now possible to share sites, folders and files across MIT and Unitec.
The Digital Roadmap.
“Now that MIT and Unitec is one unified organisation, the focus is on rationalisation and consolidation of the multitude of systems. That means adopting cloud-first platforms, strengthening data governance, and introducing capabilities like real-time analytics and AI-powered tools to support teaching and research, as well as the enabling service functions,” says Mr Foley.
“Consolidating across MIT and Unitec will reduce complexity and enable us to operate as one cohesive organisation. Our Change Champions will act as a first point of contact for kaimahi with respect to our Digital Roadmap so please let them know if you have any queries or suggestions.
“We want to have a two-way kōrero with kaimahi because that’ll lead to the best outcome for the unified organisation,” Mike Foley says.

As a researcher, I need to be able to work across institutions and countries. Our system seems to make this very difficult.
Our current systems do – The plan as we rationalise is to make things easier for staff and students to do the work they need to do irrespective of locality. We have to transition to the new digital estate to enable this to happen. – Mike Foley, Head of Digital Strategy & Experience, MIT and Unitec
