Access through the back road, also known as Spine Road, will be permanently blocked from this weekend, 6th February 2026.
This closure, with limited notice, has been expected for some time from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa as part of the land sale and ongoing development of the adjoining areas.
In conjunction with this update, we are currently working with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to confirm the areas of land that Unitec can continue using for car parking as part of the agreement. Staff and students may have noticed already key areas that are now under development that impact where we can park.
We had hoped to share both updates together; however, we are not yet in a position of certainty regarding the locations of these areas (though we expect to have clarity within the next week or so).
What this means for Unitec:
- There will no longer be access to areas previously used by many as free parking once paid parking resumes.
- Access through this road as a route from Gate 3 to Gate 4 will no longer be available.
- The FM/Property teams are currently exploring alternative options for moving around campus. Updates will follow.
We aim to provide more information on car parking availability very shortly.
