Beloved former staff member mourned as ‘backbone of the Pacific Centre’

It is with deep sadness to inform you of the passing of former Unitec staff member, Sose Uputaua Maea on Monday, 26 January 2026.

Sose was a much-loved administrator who served Unitec for 28 years from 1988 until her retirement in 2016.

During that time, she was instrumental in the formation of Unitec’s Pacific Centre in the early 1990s.

“Sose was a humble and respected colleague, family member, a friend, an associate, and much more to many of us,” says Head of School, Healthcare & Social Practice, Dr Linda Aumua, who worked closely with Sose in her former role as the Pacific Centre Director.

Sose’s journey started at Unitec as a student when it was Carrington Polytechnic. On completion of a Woman Back to Work course she gained a role at Unitec as the administrator for the provider’s Training Opportunities programme.

She spent almost ten years in that role before becoming the administrator for the Pacific Centre after restructuring.

“Being the backbone of the Pacific Centre and the first point of call for students, staff and our communities, we know she will be missed and remembered for her untiring commitment,” says Dr Aumua.

“Sose was generous and provided critical support to anyone who needed her help. Although Sose retired from Unitec ten years ago, she continues to impact so many of us and the work that we do currently.”

Pacific Success Navigator and former colleague, Umusa Pava Saifoloi adds: “She brought cheers, laughter and calmness to the Centre.”

The funeral service for Sose will be held on Friday 30 January at Waikumete Cemetery where she will be interred with her late husband Tolu Tele’a Uputaua Maea.

Unitec Pacific Staff will be handing over a meaalofa (koha) to Sose’s children and family. If you wish to contribute, please email Pacific Success Navigator, Rokosiga Morrison rmorrison@unitec.ac.nz or you can deposit directly to this account (by Friday morning, 30 Jan) Rokosiga Morrison 01-0071-0307229-00.

Our deepest condolences go out to Sose’s aiga and loved ones.

I remember Sose, from the days at Building 48, when Course Info, International, Institute Relations (aka Marketing now). Always with a smile on her face, a flower in her hair, and in her Pacific outfits.
Rest in eternal love, dear Sose.
