Important update on Building 170, Mt Albert campus

Unitec is committed to providing kaimahi with high quality environments and facilities for working and learning which reflect the value of the mahi we do.

In recent years, our team has been endeavouring to fix leaks in the roof of Building 170 at Mt Albert campus as they arise.

The facility opened in 1990 and is the current base for Bridgepoint which includes Bridging Education, Language Studies and our IELTS Test Centre, as well as providing office space for some Creative Industries kaimahi. The building also provides teaching space for a number of schools.

Initial investigations into repair and replacement of the roof by a specialist building survey company, conducted on behalf of Unitec, showed extensive damage to the structure has occurred due to a lack of weather tightness.

As a result, the cost of the work required to fully remediate the building is unsustainable when the need to provide upgraded facilities in line with today’s requirements for teaching and learning are considered, along with replacing the air conditioning and ventilation system.

Senior Leadership Team believes the best course of action is to demolish the building to ensure we are offering the best teaching and work spaces we can, while investing wisely in other buildings to improve those facilities.

We will continue to make use of Building 170 for the remainder of 2025, with demolition work expected to take place during the year-end break.

We have met with kaimahi who are directly impacted by this decision and will continue to work with them to finalise a plan utilising our current property footprint to provide continuity of teaching, learning and support services.

Thank you for your patience and understanding with this situation.
