Unitec at Big Gay Out!

Sunday 16th February saw Unitec having a formal presence at Big Gay Out for the first time in many years. It was great to be able to connect with queer whanau and allies from all over Auckland. Unitec’s presence was expertly led by Amy Jesensek (Secondary School and Community Liaison), with strong support from the Unitec Rainbow and Ally Network, Romy Sunny (Events and Communications Business Partner), and the Marketing team. Throughout the day, various members of the Unitec Rainbow and Ally Network also contributed, ensuring a vibrant and welcoming experience.

At an event that hosts appearances from many other tertiary providers, it was great to see Unitec back in the mix – our presence was noticed by many! With the event being in our own backyard, so to speak, at Coyle Park in Pt Chev, its even more important we are their to ensure local students and our community have the opportunity to connect with us.

The temporary tattoos and badge making were a hit with the kids (and parents who needed some down time), and whilst this was an event more focused on spreading the Unitec name and emphasising us as a safe space for all students to learn, there were some programme specific conversations taking place.

Congratulations to all those involved for putting this together. I hope this is the start of a long presence for Unitec at BGO.
