Unitec’s annual 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition took place last week. This enthusiastically attended event is open to all Unitec Master’s students and always a highlight of the academic year.
This year’s winner was Jochelee Punzalan, Master of Applied Business Major in Business Analytics, Brewing Satisfaction in Auckland CBD Coffee Shops, Supervisor Dr Susan Shu.
The two runners-up were:
Sembian Renga Rajan Veerasamy, Master of Applied Business, A Content Analysis of Political Campaigns on Facebook during the 2023 New Zealand Election, supervisor Denisa Hebblethwaite, and Jayna Patel, Master of Architecture Professional, Bandhan: To bind, To Tie, supervisor Dr Min Hall
The challenge of the 3MT competition is for presenters to explain their research projects in terms that are accessible to a lay audience, all within a strict three-minute timeframe. The range of projects presented was diverse, making the task of selecting a winner and runners-up a challenging one for the judges.
The primary aim of this competition is to help students communicate their thesis projects dynamically and concisely. It offers them the opportunity to hone a vital skill set: the ability to articulate complex topics concisely, engage an audience’s attention, and deliver confident public presentations. Judging criteria include the quality of the presentation as well as the accessibility of the narrative, communication skills, engagement, and comprehension.
The projects spanned a vast array of subjects. Many student supervisors were in attendance and received acknowledgment from the MC as essential partners in the development of research capability and the overall research project at this level of study. Supervisors and students frequently co-publish research stemming from these projects.
It was an outstanding effort by all the competitors, well done!
