Supported Learning ākonga take a tour of Mataaho

Thanks to our Supported Learning team for sending in this report of their recent visit to Mataaho…

The Health and Safety Team (along with our two amazing lecturers Lynn Solomon and Mary Perich) took a group of 18 students from Supported Learning for a tour of Mataaho.  The aim of the tour was to give the students a great learning experience. We are thrilled to say these expectations were fulfilled.  After the tour Lynn said, “this will be a great help for our students in their work placements, future learning and with their assessments”.

The visit started with a classroom Health and Safety induction where we talked about emergency procedures and incidents and how to report these.  The students then headed over to Mataaho where they put on their Personal Protective Equipment (Hi Vis and safety glasses).  Bruce Hilliard then led the tour around the mechanics workshop and showed everyone how a forklift was operated including the risks involved.

The visit then culminated in a Q&A session.  The students had lots of great questions, but we awarded a special prize to one particular student who asked some fantastic relevant Health and Safety questions.  A huge congratulations to Jake Findlay who won the Safety Appreciation award.

Great feedback was also given to our Health and Safety Advisor, “Bruce, you have a way of connecting, engaging and the ability to pass on knowledge to our students that is so awesome to see and be a part of”.

The tour was a huge success with lots of excitement and many students commenting on how much they enjoyed learning about one the Trades.

The opportunity was a great example of Kaitiakitanga – Guardianship, bringing together the sharing of Health and Safety knowledge and processes, alongside examples of how to keep ourselves and others safe in our learning environment.
