Social Practice whānau celebrate World Social Work Day at Waitākere campus

Social Work students and lecturers came together at Waitākere campus last week to celebrate World Social Work Day 2023.

This is an annual event celebrated on the third Tuesday of March every year to recognise and celebrates the contributions of social workers to society and raises awareness about the importance of social work as a profession.

The day is also an opportunity to advocate for social justice and social change and to raise awareness about the needs of vulnerable populations.

This year’s theme is ‘Respecting diversity through joint social action’. It stems from the People’s Charter for a New Eco Social World and recognises that change.

Speaking at the event, Social Practice Academic Program Manager Aulola Lino asked the students to think about what becoming a social worker entailed and why was it important for them to celebrate their work.

She invited the students to share what diversity meant to them and how as social workers they contributed to diversity and why that was important.

“It’s important for us to celebrate who we are, what we do and what we are going towards,” she said.
