Staying healthy with free healthchecks

Unitec Bachelor of Nursing students volunteered their time last week to offer free health checks to Unitec whānau. The students saw 52 people at Mt Albert and a further 22 at Waitakere.

The health checks gave the Year Two Bachelor of Nursing  ākonga an opportunity to sharpen their people skills while giving our whānau an important check-up, which is often neglected.

They checked blood pressure, BMI, blood glucose, waist measurements, vision screening and offered health education about reducing cholesterol and nutrition. People could also brave jumping on the scales to check their body composition.

“The response was overwhelmingly positive,” says APM Kate Berry. “The students were lovely, offering a valuable service, and we hope to have another event either later on this year or early next year. Overall it is up to the person to monitor their health, but many people got a shock seeing the amount of sugar in a bottle of coke, V, and seeing the model of a blood vessel full of cholesterol.”

Thank you for your mahi.
