Disc golf teaches ākonga event leadership skills

The day is part of Event Leadership. This is a L5 class which is part of the Diploma of Sport, Recreation and Exercise, the Certificate in Exercise and the Certificate in Community Sport and Recreation. The ākonga spend the first half of the semester planning the Event in a series of in class workshops and group work, putting together documentation and preparing for the Event.

They first received a short coaching session from the Owner of Disc Golf NZ, Haydn Shore, then played an 18 hole round in a Shotgun start format. The event was rounded off with a sausage sizzle and prize giving, recognising not only the best (lowest score) individual and team, but Player of the Day, Best Team Spirit and a Longest Drive winner.

A team of 11 Event Leadership students delivered the whole event and will subsequently reflect on their learnings and experience.
