Timelines for New Programme Development Submissions

Development of New Programmes or Major Changes to an Existing Programme

Submission dates of Programme Development applications must meet both Unitec and NZQA deadlines if they are to be approved in time for the requested start date. The following indicates the timeline that is associated with Developing a New Programme or making a Major Change to an Existing Programme.

Timeline for Internal Development prior to NZQA submission

The indicative timeline for Internal Approval is:

  • Formal Programmes – 4 – 6 months from business case to NZQA submission
  • Training Schemes/Micro-credentials – 2 – 4 months from business case to NZQA submission
  • Short Courses/Unitec approved Training Schemes – 1 – 2 months for final approval

Timeline for NZQA Approval Process

NZQA advise that applications for Degree Level Programmes should be made nine months before the intended delivery of the degree. Programmes of Study at level 1-6 should be submitted 6 months before the intended delivery date.

  • NZQA aims to complete the programme approval and accreditation process within six months of receiving the application, but this depends on:
    • the quality of the application
    • the availability of panellists
    • the timing of panel visits
    • the time it takes for applicants to respond to and meet any panel requirements after the panel visit.
  • Unitec Set-up can take up to 6 weeks including TEC approvals
