Our Canine Behaviour and Training students, along with their ‘dog squad’ doggies, put on an impressive (and very cute) display last week in the annual demonstration of their year’s learning. The show was led by lecturers Environmental and Animal Sciences Lecturers Paula and Jo Thorne.
The one-year New Zealand Certificate in Animal Management (Canine Behaviour and Training) programme covers a wide range of training including identifying different scents, tricks like high-fives, foot work and jumps, and following verbal and physical commands. Students work with the same dog for the duration of the course resulting in a close bond between dog and student.
Proud families and friends came along to watch the show and tautoko (support) the group as they performed on the grass area outside B115. The demonstration, which was military-themed (with students and dogs dressed up accordingly), involved a lot of visually-effective coordinated group work. This was a great hit with the audience, as were the individual performances that allowed the distinct personalities and strengths of each dog shine through.
The ‘dog squad’ show doubled as an end-of-course celebration for the students, who will graduate next year.
