A 101 on PEPs and the resources available

Our commitment to academic quality has a direct impact on student success so it is a day-to-day priority for us and a key element of the NZQA’s External Evaluations and Reviews – ‘EER’. We all play a part in contributing to student success and academic so it’s important we understand the academic quality process and if you’re not directly involved, what it all means!

What are PEPs?

This month a key focus for academic staff is to contribute to their programme team’s upcoming ‘Interim PEPs’ – Programme Evaluation and Planning. This mahi is important as PEPs help us understand what is working well with a programme, how well it is working, plus what we need to do to improve student success for the following semester. A full PEP is done at end-of-year and “lite” PEP is in the middle-of-the year.

PEPs are about self-assessment and reflection and use the Āta kōrero process

As Nick Sheppard outlined in his Pou Tukutuku Weekly intro – 6 July 2020, PEPs are a self-assessment and reflective process for programme teams, using a targeted and focused approach to evaluate educational performance and self-assessment capability. To support this, we introduced our Āta kōrero programme designed  to assist with self-assessment, improve our evaluation skills and provide relevant and robust evidence using the guiding principles of Āta.

This Āta kōrero presentation is another great resource to help you prepare for PEPs and is also available on the Te Korowai Kahurangi – PEP, Nest page.

PEPs for academic staff – resources and timing

The Interim PEPs deadline for submission is 31 August 2020. The Te Korowai Kahurangi team has put together a range of information on the Nest to help guide you in this process, including the five focus areas, a pre-populated template, a timeline and other support resources – make sure you check out this page and if you need any further support, contact Eric Stone or Sue Crossan.

Power BI – Dashboards are an important tool for PEPs

Key to PEPs are the Power BI dashboards. There’s a lot of valuable data available, so please ensure you are familiar with using the dashboards and contact Te Korowai Kahurangi if you need any help: tkkinsights@unitec.ac.nz.

Te Korowai Kahurangi are regularly updating and creating new additions to this platform, and in June released the new Non-completion reporting dashboard and in early July the updated and improved Graduate survey outcomes dashboard.

If you need support on dashboards, contact tkkinsights@unitec.ac.nz.
