Meet Jonty Valentine, who recently joined Creative Industries as a lecturer in Graphic Design on our Bachelor of Creative Enterprise and Master of Creative Practice programmes.

Jonty will teach all elements of graphic design on our multi-disciplinary three-year Creative Enterprise programme, which also includes animation, photography and moving image, visual arts and illustration. He will also supervise students on the 18-month Masters programme.

“We’re honoured to have someone of Jonty’s calibre joining our Design and Contemporary Arts programmes, bringing proven teaching and research expertise and award-winning industry connections,” said Dr Vanessa Byrnes, Head of the School of Creative Industries.

“We’ve created a dynamic environment within our Creative Enterprise and Masters of Creative Practice programmes with a focus on the development of transferable skills and real-world projects for the benefit of our students,” Dr Byrnes added. “Jonty brings a huge amount of talent and creativity to the team to further boost the disciplinary expertise in our teams.”

Jonty, who was previously the head of Graphic Design at Whitecliffe College, also runs his own award-winning design and Risograph printing studio, Index. His work has been published internationally in titles including All Messed Up and New Graphic Design, in Idea, IdN and Threaded magazines, and profiled in many website articles. Jonty’s primary area of research is New Zealand graphic design history and he is the co-editor of the periodical The National Grid with Luke Wood (University of Canterbury).

Jonty, who holds a BFA from Canterbury University and an MFA from Yale University (both in Graphic Design), joins us in late June.
