Who has a ‘very good dog’ in their bubble? Training and tricks to do at home

Are you looking for ways to keep your dog entertained during lockdown? Have you thought about adding some training and tricks to your daily walks and at home? A recent Unitec Canine Behaviour and Training graduate, Augusta Grayson, has put together some tips on how to make the time you spend with your dog fun for them, both physically and mentally, meaning a happy and satisfied dog at the end of the day.

Check out Augusta’s video on how to make walks more awesome. The video is nice and short – just three minutes – and shows how you can teach some easy tricks using items you may have at home (a large stick and two buckets make a simple jump). Many don’t require any special gear.

Here is a current student sharing how to feed your dog and keep their brains working at the same time.

Key tips to remember when training your dog:

  1. Keep training sessions short – five minutes at a time.
  2. Repeat often and vary your training each day – you’ll be surprised how quickly they pick things up with short but frequent training sessions.
  3. Ensure you have their favourite reward on hand – a favourite treat or toy – not just what is easiest for you. If the reward isn’t worth it, they won’t do it.
  4. Have fun!

Augusta has some more tips and information on keeping us and our dogs safe and sane during lockdown.

The EAS team will be sharing Augusta’s tips over on their Facebook page too. They’d love for you to come and check it out, and post videos of what you and your pup are up to. Find them at: https://www.facebook.com/EASUnitec/
