Programme Development

Whakawhanake Hōtaka | Programme Development

Why we do it

Creating a new Programme, Short Course or Training Scheme is informed by our ability to spot an opportunity, and react to stakeholder feedback, governmental directions and self-evaluation.

What it involves

Developing a new programme, short course or training scheme involves working directly with industry and stakeholders to establish the need for the development. You will need to gather evidence to support and submit a business case. Once approval is given, the development process begins

Types of Development

Programme Development at Unitec includes formal academic programmes such as:

And non standard academic provision such as:

The process of Developing each varies depending on the type of new provision. Formal academic programmes, micro-credentials and some training schemes will require approval and/or accreditation from NZQA. Short Courses and some forms of Training Schemes can be approved internally by Unitec. For information of the differences in Training Schemes see the ‘definitions page‘.

Approval and accreditation

Approval and accreditation processes define NZQA’s quality requirements for education organisations and the programmes they provide. The purpose of these processes is to ensure that tertiary education organisations (TEOs) operating in or from New Zealand provide quality education for students that meets the requirements set out in NZQA rules and the Education Act 1989.

NZQA processes include:

Approval is a process where a TEO seeks permission to develop or implement a new quality assured product. These include:

Accreditation is a process where a TEO seeks permission to use or deliver an NZQA-approved programme that has already been developed, including one developed by another TEO. These include:

Once a TEO has gained approval and/or accreditation, the TEO needs to continue to meet NZQA requirements and rules to maintain them.

Te Komiti Whakamana Hotaka Hou | Academic Approvals Committee

Te Komiti Whakamana Hotaka Hou | Academic Approvals Committee (AAC) ensures that all applications for new or amended programmes that require external approval (e.g. from NZQA) are of the required standard and are aligned with Unitec strategic and quality requirements.  This is very detailed quality work.  AAC makes recommendations to Academic Board about programme approvals.  It meets when required.

AAC approves some internal applications such as Short Courses and Training Schemes that do not require NZQA approval.

This committee oversees the work of the Programme Improvements Committee.
